If Brad Woodall gets more starts for the Milwaukee
Brewers it could be for his bat as well as his pitching.
Woodall held the Cubs scoreless into the seventh inning, had three hits, walked and scored twice as the Brewers ended Chicago's 10-game home winning streak with an 11-2 victory Tuesday.
"I really didn't hit the ball hard. Everything I hit fell in,'' Woodall said. " I was just trying to see a lot of pitches, foul off some pitches, make the other pitcher throw a lot of pitches. ... I just hit a couple of flares and they fell in.''
It was the first win as a starter for Woodall (3-2), who had made only seven starts in his 28 career appearances.
Jeromy Burnitz, John Jaha and Jose Valentin all homered to pace a 16-hit attack to back Woodall, who became the first Brewers pitcher to get three hits in a game since Jim Lonborg on Aug. 2, 1972.
" He just did a tremendous job,'' Milwaukee manager Phil Garner said. " He did everything you like to see a guy do. He gave us offense and great pitching.''
Woodall gave up two unearned runs on four hits in 6 1-3 innings. He struck out four and walked one.
Woodall was also successful in shutting down Sammy Sosa, who went 0-for-3 after hitting three home runs Monday night in the Cubs' win. He entered the game with 15 home runs and 32 RBI in his last 16 games.
" I figured the odds were against him doing what he did last night,'' Woodall said. " Not many people can do that. I just wanted to make good pitches to him.
" I didn't want to make any pitches out over the plate because he's so hot right now he'll crush them. I tried to put the pitches on the corners, work then in and out. I didn't try to trick him.''
The Brewers weren't tricked by the Cubs pitchers, extending their home run string to 13 over the last six games.
" We've been streaky with our home runs,'' Garner said. " They come and go with us. We have potential to hit more home runs, but it's just everybody getting to that potential. Hopefully, we're there.''
Valentin's homer was hist fourth in as many games and 10th of the season.
" Valentin's capable as long as he keeps his front shoulder in and doesn't start trying to pull the ball,'' Garner said.
" He's got as much power as anybody ... but he's got to not worry about hitting home runs. He's got to think about hitting the ball back through the diamond, and the rest of it takes care of itself.
Chicago starter Steve Trachsel (6-3) allowed four runs on six hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out five.
" This will be a tough one to forget,'' Trachsel said. " It's just one of those days.''
Burnitz started the Brewers off in the first inning, hitting a 2-2 pitch from Trachsel into the center field bleachers for his 15th home run.
" We're a kind of team that can't ride on a few guys backs,'' Burnitz said. " We're just not that talented. We don't have any real great players. We need everybody to be having a really good year to for us to be a successful team.''
The Brewers padded their lead to 3-0 in the third on RBI singles by Jeff Cirillo and Jaha. Then Jaha hit his fourth homer of the year in the fifth inning, making it 4-0.
Milwaukee scored six runs in the sixth inning to seal the win.
Kevin Foster, relieved Trachsel to start the inning and gave up hits to all four batters he faced, including Valentin's two-run homer that made it 6-0.
Terry Mulholland relieved Foster and gave up an RBI single to Fernando Vina, making it 7-0. After a wild pitch added another run, Dave Nilsson's two-run single made it 10-0.
Brant Brown's two-run single in the seventh accounted for all of Chicago's runs.
" Some people prefer to lose big (if they lose), but to lose 11-2 shows you're not in the game,'' Cubs manager Jim Riggleman said. " I don't like to get dominated.'' Notes: Milwaukee has homered in six straight games, a season high. ... Woodall was making his third start and 11th appearance of the season. ... Trachsel's loss was his first this season in Wrigley Field. He was 5-0 in his first eight starts at home.
