General manager Ned Colletti said Tuesday that Lilly
helped stabilize the Dodgers' rotation after he was acquired in a deal with the
Cubs at the trade deadline.
The 34-year-old left-hander was 7-4 with a 3.52 ERA in
12 starts for Los Angeles. He and Ryan Theriot went to the Dodgers for Blake
DeWitt, Kyle Smit and Bret Wallach.
SURPRISE: BRAVES DUMP CABRERA
The Atlanta Braves released outfielder Melky Cabrera
in a curious decision and let go of right-hander Takashi Saito.
Cabrera, 26, hit .255 with four homers and 42 RBI and
started in 115 games during the regular season, then went 0-for-8 in the NL
Division Series against the San Francisco Giants. He was acquired as part of a
five-player trade that sent right-hander Javier Vazquez to the New York Yankees
on Dec. 22.
Cabrera made $3.1 million and would have been eligible
for salary arbitration. The Braves had until Dec. 2 to offer a 2011 contract
and could have traded him before then.
